Isaac Bashevis Singer anses vara 1900-talets främsta jiddishförfattare. Han föddes i Polen, men lämnade sitt hemland och bosatte sig i Amerika. Singers produktion är rik och 1978 tilldelades han Nobelpriset i litteratur.
Isaac Bashevis Singer föddes 1902 i Leoncin nära Warszawa, Polen. Han växte upp i en rabbinsk familj i den judiska byn Bilgoraj. År 1935 utvandrade han från Polen till USA på grund av det ökande nazistiska hotet från Tyskland.
I New York började han skriva för den jiddischspråkiga tidningen The Forward samt publicera romaner och noveller. Hans berättelser är ofta fantasifulla, med stark dragning till livets mysterier. Han har skrivit ett femtiotal romaner och är kanske mest känd för Trollkarlen från Lublin eller serien som handlar om hans eget liv och förflutna i Polen och New York.
